How to join?

Any individual engaged in working life or studying within higher education is welcome to join an Akava affiliate union. The unions welcome students, employees, self-employed professionals and entrepreneurs. The jaseneksi.fi service will help you in finding a suitable union on the basis of your field of education or your degree.

If you are in working life, you can contact the shop steward or representative of Akava unions at your workplace and they will assist you in selecting a suitable union.


The Union of Professionals in Natural, Environmental and Forestry Sciences Loimu

The Union of Professionals in Natural, Environmental and Forestry Sciences Loimu is a multidisciplinary trade union with membership engaged in key branches regarding the wellbeing of humankind and future of our planet. Loimu has a total of approx. 14,000 members of whom about a fifth are students.

The career services provided by Loimu support successful career development and job seeking. Our members have access to the services of a career coach by appointment and a selection of more than 150 training events every year.

We supervise and promote the interests of our members in terms of salary, employment relationship and professional matters. We influence on legislation related to working life as well as the educational, employment and economic policies both directly and through the central organisation Akava and its negotiation organisations. Loimu provides its members with legal advice in questions related to employment and service relationships.

We are comprised of 44 member associations. They offer dynamic and member-oriented local activities that are easy to join, for example, by participating in excursions and trainings.

Who can join

Our members have higher education in the fields of, for example, biology, life sciences, chemistry, geology, limnology, forestry, environmental sciences, meteorology, geography, statistics, physics or mathematics. They are employed in positions related to environmental research and protection, research and development in pharmaceutical and other chemical industries, within health care, forestry and forest industries as well as bioeconomy. In addition, members of Loimu are working at universities and research institutes.
